JUDY WOODRUFF (JOURNALIST): Presidential leadership has the most effect when it’s authentic. Jimmy Carter promoted and talked about human rights, as did Mrs. Carter, when he was president.

From that time in the crucible of being under pressure, serving in office, being held to account, we come to know what someone’s true values are.

He grew up in a rural part of south Georgia where Blacks were not given the education that whites were. They didn’t have job opportunities. Carter believed that was wrong. He said the time for racial discrimination is over.

He went on to advocate for human rights because he believed that all people should be treated equally, fairly, and Rosalynn Carter was right there at his side holding the same belief.

The public can see that and the press can see it, and I think it comes through.
