Lesson Plan: Amazon Rainforest Defenders Confront Violence, Encroachment and Politics (Econ.)
Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has been one of the most significant concerns of environmentalists and indigenous peoples over the past several decades. Indigenous tribes in the Amazon want to protect their land from destruction and development. Environmentalists want to protect the rainforest to preserve the natural resources, biological diversity and reduction of carbon dioxide that it provides. These interests have come into conflict with the economic interests of cattle ranchers, gold miners and others who see economic opportunities in cutting down the rainforest.
