Lesson Plan: Japan’s Hibakusha Voices
On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This was the first and only use of nuclear weapons in a war, yet its ramifications are still felt. In its wake, tens of thousands perished immediately, while more suffered from radiation poisoning, severe burns, and trauma. Those who survived – known as hibakusha – faced not only physical scars but emotionally as well.
