Lesson Plan: Double V – Teaching With Primary Sources (Scaffolded Writing Resources)

During World War II, the United States fought for freedom and democracy overseas, but many Black Americans were denied equal rights at home. They faced segregation, discrimination in hiring and unequal treatment in the military, even as the country prepared for war. These experiences led Black Americans to question whether the United States was truly living up to its ideals. Activists and soldiers began to demand change, connecting the fight against fascism abroad to the fight against racism at home.
