Lesson Plan: Media, Memory and the Legacy of Tiananmen Square
In 1989, over a million Chinese citizens, led by students and workers, protested in Tiananmen Square for free speech and government reform. The movement ended in a violent crackdown, which the Chinese government portrayed as necessary for stability. This event highlights how political power and media control can shape public understanding of protest movements. Through the study of the Tiananmen Square protests and the song โHypnotizeโ by System of a Down, students will examine how narratives are constructed, silenced or manipulated. They will practice close reading, critical listening and discussion to evaluate media’s role in framing global events.
