In 1993, federal agents raided the headquarters of the Branch Davidians, an apocalyptic religious sect in Waco, Texas. All told, the episode resulted in the deaths of four federal agents and 82 Branch Davidians, including as many as 28 children. Today, the Waco siege represents a rallying point for anti-government and militia groups who proclaim fear of government aggression. The complexity of the events in Waco and their aftermath have had ripple effects that have continued for decades.
