Lesson Plan: Toxic Waste in the Neighborhood
In 1978, toxic chemicals leaking from an old landfill thrust a New York community near Buffalo into the national headlines, and made Love Canal synonymous with environmental disaster. In 1980, new legislation known as the Superfund law outlined the roles and responsibilities of the government and businesses in preventing and responding to environmental contamination. Thousands of contaminated sites exist nationally, a result of hazardous waste that has been dumped, left in the open or otherwise improperly managed. These sites include manufacturing and processing plants, landfills and mines.
