Lesson Plan: The Cold War on TV – Teaching With Primary Sources (Scaffolded Writing Resources)

In the post-World War II era, Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin used the media and a populist message of anti-communism to become a political celebrity. Through speeches and accusations, he attacked many citizens and government workers with little evidence, until the respected reporter Edward R. Murrow issued a report challenging McCarthyโ€™s actions. The power of television was now being used to illuminate McCarthyโ€™s fraudulent claims and help the nation move on from the Second Red Scare.
