Lesson Plan: The Birth of the U.S. Political Convention in 1831

Third-party movements have a long tradition in American elections. Although seldom successful, third-party movements serve a role by establishing innovative campaign strategies and reforms that may be adopted by the major parties. In the 1830s, the short-lived Anti-Mason party was responsible for introducing the political nominating convention into American politics. This lesson will examine several past third-party movements and allow students to plan their own political party convention.
