Lesson Plan: Picking a Partner: The V.P. Relationship

The relationship between presidents and vice presidents is unique. Sometimes internal divisions spill into public view. After Andrew Jacksonโ€™s election in 1828, a rift developed between Jackson and his vice president, John C. Calhoun. After Jackson appointed John Eaton secretary of war, Calhounโ€™s wife led an effort to shun Eatonโ€™s new wife. The fallout from this episode, known as the Eaton affair, along with Calhounโ€™s machinations against taxes on imports, led to Calhoun being the first vice president to resign from office.
