Lesson Plan: 1966 Midterms – Teaching With Primary Sources (Scaffolded Writing Resources)
In the 1964 U.S. Presidential Election, Democratic President Lyndon Johnson won a landslide victory that propelled him to the White House. Despite his sound victory, a string of southern states, all traditionally loyal to the Democrat Party, broke ranks and voted for the Republican candidate. Two years later in the 1966 midterm elections the trend continued and voters across the South elected Republicans to office for the first time in generations. This lesson explores why a regional shift in the ideological makeup of the country occurred and the lasting effects it still has today.
