Lesson Plan: The 1966 Midterm Elections and Party Realignment
President Lyndon Johnson won a landslide victory in 1964, even as five Deep South states backed Barry Goldwater, a Republican. Many white voters in this longtime Democratic stronghold were breaking with the party over civil rights. Two years later, Republicans made further gains, with voters across the South electing Republicans to offices for the first time in nearly 100 years. Those elections marked an important stage in a decades-long realignment that would reshape the parties’ regional support and sharpen their ideological differences, helping produce the political divisions familiar today.
