Lesson Plan: Theme Song Analysis: Evolving Perceptions of the American Family

Explore the historical context of the cultural conflict known as the “mommy wars,” a debate that intensified in the late 20th century regarding a mother’s place in the home versus in the workplace. The Retro Report video will detail how this polarization emerged, focusing on the roles of economic changes, evolving gender roles and media attention in shaping public opinion. In this lesson, students will analyze cultural artifacts — the theme songs and opening visuals of popular American sitcoms — from the 1950s through the 1990s. By comparing the songs from these shows, students will trace how the evolving portrayal of women’s roles, family structures and domestic life either reinforced or challenged traditional ideals at the heart of the debate over changing family dynamics.
