Lesson Plan: The Chemistry of Persistence: Analyzing the Legacy of Agent Orange
Grades 9-12
During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military sprayed the defoliant Agent Orange over millions of acres to remove jungle cover and reduce protection for opposing forces. The herbicide contained dioxin, a toxic contaminant later linked to serious health conditions, including certain cancers and birth defects, among people exposed to it. In this lesson, students will explore the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War and describe its effects on health and the environment.
