Lesson Plan: Special Ops: Lessons From History
Two high-profile rescue missions shaped how modern special operations forces plan and carry out complex missions. In 1976, Israeli commandos carried out a raid at Entebbe Airport in Uganda, rescuing more than 100 hostages held by militants after a plane hijacking. The operation is widely regarded as a success, though several people were killed, including one hostage and the Israeli unit commander. Four years later, the United States attempted a rescue mission in Iran during the Iran hostage crisis. The operation, known as Eagle Claw, was aborted after a series of mechanical problems and a fatal collision on the ground that killed eight U.S. service members. Both missions influenced later U.S. special operations planning, including the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.
