Lesson Plan: President Nixon’s 1972 Visit to China – Teaching With Primary Sources (Scaffolded Writing Resources)

Richard Nixon’s 1972 trip to China surprised the world because the U.S. and China had been enemies during the Cold War. Nixon wanted to work with China to balance the Soviet Union’s power, even though Taiwan was a major point of disagreement between them. The U.S. and China decided to delay resolving the Taiwan issue, leading to a long-term policy in which the U.S. supports Taiwan but avoids clearly promising to defend it. Today, China’s growing power and its desire to control Taiwan have made this old decision a serious and dangerous global issue.
