The relationship between presidents and vice presidents is unique. Sometimes internal divisions spill into public view. After Andrew Jackson’s election in 1828, a rift developed between Jackson and his vice president, John C. Calhoun. After Jackson appointed John Eaton secretary of war, Calhoun’s wife led an effort to shun Eaton’s new wife. The fallout from this episode, known as the Eaton affair, along with Calhoun’s machinations against taxes on imports, led to Calhoun being the first vice president to resign from office.
