Lesson Plan: Lincoln, King, and the Legacy of the U.S. Constitution
The U.S. Constitution is an amalgamation of Enlightenment-era principles and beliefs, curated by members of the Constitutional Convention. The document served as inspiration for both Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as they sought to explain their thinking around protecting self-governance, liberty and freedom. This lesson has students examine how members of the convention sourced ideas as they worked to create the Constitution and later, how the language and intent of the Constitution inspired others to seek change.
