Lesson Plan: Fire Safety and Chemicals in Our Clothing

In 1977, the federal government banned the use of a flame retardant, Tris, in childrenโ€™s pajamas because it was suspected to cause kidney cancer in humans. But Tris continued to be used in a host of other products, including cribs, car seats and furniture. The use of flame retardants has continued to be contentious at both the federal and state levels, and there are no specific tests required before a new chemical can enter the market. Challenge your students to use their knowledge of chemicals to explore Safety Data Sheets and recommend a flame retardant for a clothing company. How will your students incorporate the voices of multiple stakeholders in their recommendation?
