Lesson Plan: Black Swimmers, Reclaiming a Tradition

Decades of segregation, discrimination and lack of access have led to an alarming disparity: Black children today drown in swimming pools at a rate far higher than that of white children, studies have shown. Now new programs are working to overcome barriers and get everybody into the pool. This lesson has students examine historical examples of segregation, supporting primary sources and contemporary responses related to Black access to public amenities and swimming pools.
