Lesson Plan: Activism and Repression in 1980s East Germany
In the 1980s, East Germany was a country in which the government tightly controlled the press, publishing, and public expression, including discussion of environmental problems. Despite those restrictions and the risk of surveillance or punishment, activists circulated information through unofficial networks, often working through Protestant churches. At the same time, the Ministry for State Security, known as the Stasi, carried out extensive surveillance of East German citizens.
