Lesson Plan: How Heroin Spread Beyond Cities and Changed Drug Policy
Drug addiction and the government’s response to it have been among the most consequential public policy issues of the past 50 years. Communities across the United States have experienced the effects of addiction, drug-related crime and the policies designed to address them. The American system of federalism has led federal, state and local governments to adopt different approaches to responding to drug addiction and its effects. This lesson introduces students to several of those approaches and asks them to consider how the United States and local communities can respond to the challenges associated with drug addiction. It also examines the factors that have influenced policymakers’ decisions to emphasize criminal justice, public health, and treatment-based responses over time.
