Mary Ann Zielonko, the partner of Kitty Genovese, the Queens bar manager whose brutal murder in 1964 shocked New York, died last week, The New York Times reported. She was 85.
Zielonko and Genovese had lived together for about a year when Genovese was stalked, raped and stabbed to death as she walked home after a work shift on March 13, 1964.
ย โI was very numb, I would say, from the whole thing,โ Zielonko recalledย in a 2016 interview,ย linked above.ย โI felt, wow, she was so close, and I was sleeping and I didnโt know what happened, and that I could have saved her. You know? Thatโs what I really think, still.โ
A front-page article in The Times described how 38 of their neighbors had heard screams and watched, yet did nothing. The facts, however, revealed a different story. Later investigations found that only a few witnesses clearly understood what was happening, and many thought they had heard a fight.
“But reality has, to some degree, been beside the point,” Clyde Haberman wrote for Retro Report. “A paradigm of danger and indifference in an anonymous city had taken hold,” and it came to be known as Kitty Genovese syndrome. “Across the decades since her murder in 1964, she has endured as a symbol of urban disconnection and apathy, a victim not only of a knife-wielding killer but of bystandersโ unwillingness to get involved in resisting evil.”
Genovese’s killer,ย Winston Moseley, spent more than 25 years in prison;ย he died in 2016ย at the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.
