On October 17, 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay area during a live broadcast of the World Series. The earthquake left 63 people dead, more than 3,700 injured and an estimated $10 billion in damage. This episode raised awareness about the need to take more wide-ranging precautions to prepare for bigger earthquakes.
