Lesson Plan: Geopolitics and the Fight Over the Panama Canal

A 1964 dispute between American and Panamanian high school students over which countryโ€™s flag to fly at a school in the U.S.-run Canal Zone escalated into days of violence and a shift in international relations. By analyzing the 1964 riots and the subsequent treaties, students will evaluate the complex relationship between territorial control, national identity, and global geopolitics.
