Lesson Plan: Richard Jewell: The Wrong Man
In July 1996, Atlanta hosted the Centennial Olympic Games, marking the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympics.ย The event attracted international attention, and the city was filled with excitement. That spirit was abruptly broken when a bomb exploded in Centennial Olympic Park. The attack not only shook the Games and the city but also altered the life of Richard Jewell, the security guard who discovered the device. Initially hailed as a hero for saving lives, Jewell soon found himself under intense scrutiny as law enforcement and the press cast him as a suspect. His story became a case study in news media responsibility, government power and the presumption of innocence.
